Maury County Public Schools | CTE Department

The Maury County Public Schools’ Career, College, and Technical Education Department offers coursework in 15 out of the 16 State of Tennessee recognized career clusters. Within those 15 career clusters, we offer a total of 27 different programs of study.

For the 2021-2022 school year, 67.1% of high school students in Maury County were enrolled in at least one CTE course. This exceeds the state average of 57.3%.

  • One of the goals of CTE is to ensure that students from special populations have equitable access to CTE coursework. Of the groups listed below representing special populations, the percentage listed indicates the percentage of students from that group enrolled in a CTE course of the 2021-2022 SY in Maury County (this is our latest vetted data):

    • Black/Hispanic/Native American: 62.9% (vs 48.1 state avg)

    • Students with Disabilities: 60.5% (vs 47.7% state avg)

    • Economically Disadvantaged: 59.7% (vs 52% state avg)

    • English Learners: 45% (vs 43.1% state avg)

For the graduating class of 2021-2022 (the latest information released by the state), 74.3% of students in that class concentrated in a CTE program of study in Maury County. The state of Tennessee average for that same cohort was only 54.5%, therefore our district exceeded that by almost 20 percent! A student is recognized for having concentrated in CTE if the student completes two or more credits, in sequence, within a single CTE program of study.

  • Percentage of students from special populations concentrating in CTE (21-22 SY)

    • BHN: 68.2% (vs 42.1% state avg)

    • SWD: 62.2% (vs 44.3% state avg)

    • ED: 71.2% (vs 48.6% state avg)

    • EL: 35.7% (vs 27.8% state avg)

Another data point that we track is the graduation rate of students who concentrate in a CTE program of study versus those students who do not. For the Class of 2022 in Maury County, the graduation rate for all students in the district was 86%. However, for Maury County students who concentrated in a CTE program of study, 93.5% met the required criteria to graduate.

  • The career clusters with the highest enrollment in Maury County are health science, agriculture, arts, and human services.

  • Student interest in the health sciences is important as Maury Regional Medical Center is one of the largest employers in Maury County.

  • The large enrollment in the agriculture programs of study is not surprising due to the rich agricultural history in Maury County. Our agricultural programs of study include agriculture engineering, horticulture, and animal science. The agricultural engineering program closely aligns with many of the industrial needs of Maury County with its focus on welding and engine repair.

  • The enrollment of students in the arts, including digital arts and design and A/V production, is promising due to Maury County’s proximity to Nashville and the rich opportunities afforded there in conjunction with the music industry, as well as other ventures.

  • Human services cover a large range of programs of study. One of the most popular programs within this cluster is cosmetology. Students within the program have the opportunity to earn seat hours toward their professional licensure while in high school. Human studies is another popular program within this cluster, and, with the effects of Covid still very much on the forefront of society, the need of counselors and social workers makes this program of study one of the fastest growing in terms of need for high skill and in demand workers.
